The Chubu area, located at the center of Honshu (mainland), consists of 5 prefectures, Aichi, Gifu, Mie prefectures in the Tokai area and Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in the Hokuriku area. The total population is approximately 13.58 million. The Chubu area stretches from north to south centering on Nagoya, the third largest city following Tokyo and Osaka, in the central part of Honshu.
Aichi prefecture with Nagoya metropolis in the area has the fourth largest prefectural population following Tokyo, Kanagawa and Osaka. Aichi is well-known as a place where a lot of feudal warlords, including Ieyasu Tokugawa of the Edo Shogunate, had been produced. Today, the automobile industry including Toyota Motors is concentrated in the area. In Gifu prefecture, the manufacturing industry is active from old times.
Ishikawa prefecture has a historical castle town, Kanazawa, commonly known as "Kaga Hyakumangoku" (the land giving one million sacs of rice every year) in old times. There, gold leaf craftwork and lacquer ware are flourishing. A newly opened airport in Noto has dramatically improved access to transportation so that future development of the area is expected.
