Chugoku area

Chugoku area

The Chugoku area, located at the west part of Honshu (mainland), consists of 5 prefectures, Tottori, Shimane, Okayama, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures. The Sea of Japan side is called the Sanin area and the Seto Inland Sea side is called the Sanyo area. The total population is approximately 7.7 million. Because of its mountainous land with small flats and basins, the Chugoku area lags behind other areas in building transportation networks.

In the Chugoku area, cultivation of pears at Tottori sand dune and muscats and peaches at Okayama Plain as well as oysters in Hiroshima Bay are flourishing. In addition, along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea are the factories of various light and heavy industries with which the Setouchi industrial region (such as with Mizushima, Fukuyama and Tokuyama cities) is formed.

This industrial region has developed rapidly in the postwar period since the transportation including water transportation was convenient and the industrial sites were easily available because of coastal reclamation. Besides traditional shipbuilding and textile industries, heavy industries with petrochemical complex and ironworks have developed in Shunan, Iwakuni and Mizushima and other cities.
