Okinawa area, located in the west end of Japan with an area of 2,275 km2 and population of approximately 1.37 million, constitutes of 49 habited islands and numerous uninhabited islands. The area is on the subtropical zone with a mild and warm weather all year round, however, on the typhoon alley, it is hit and damaged by typhoons every year.
The area has unique culture and custom as it was the Kingdom of Ryukyu which belonged to Japan and Qing (former Chinese dynasty) until it was annexed to Japan in Meiji era. The area enjoys one of the longest life expectancy in Japan and the food culture is drawing attention.
The prefectural income is the worst in Japan and the amount is approximately 70% of the national average, with high unemployment rate.
Project to attract IT related companies and financial related companies have been actively conducted under Okinawa Promotional Special Measures Law.

"Program under a collaboration of industry and academia for development of foreign students to contribute to the promotion of Okinawa"
Programs for promotion of Okinawa under Okinawa Promotional Special Measures Law aim to promote industries based on international business activities including "tourism and resort industries", "industries related to international distribution" and "processing trade industries" as key industries.
